Starting a New Game

Working on Victor has been great. However, I realize now I have drastically underestimated the sheer amount of content that needs generated for a proper character driven story. There will be more on all that later.

This is to announce the early development and prototyping of a small racing game. It’s going to be chocked full of all the racing goodies: hills, curves, checkpoints, speed boosts, projectiles, explosions, finish lines, and probably more essential to any racing game than a track; vehicle customization.

This entire project has a 1 year goal. In that time I hope to create:

  • a rough story line that allows single play fun
  • a multiplayer mode that allows to host or connect to friends
  • 6 NPC antagonists/rivals to race against in both multi-player and single player modes
  • 5 levels, each with a small number of unique races
  • a vehicle that can be customized

Because of Photon's Fusion 2 framework, getting the single and multiplayer modes all happened in the first month. I have started building Menu’s and UI elements, and have already sandboxed several race types.

I am taking a little time to create the rival NPCs in an old-school console kind of way. The current ‘unknown’ is setting up the AI racers in a way that would align with their character. This would involve creating and adjusting behaviors such as speed, aggressive use of pickups, how they enter corners and hopefully a few emergent things that can look like ‘behavior’. In an ideal scenario, they are recognizable beyond their color palette.

Much fun and more screenshots incoming.
